After Christmas Buys...?

Was just wondering what everyone is picking up on post-Christmas clearance?

I was going to go out and at least look for cheap candles.

Just looking for some more ideas

Turn your power to your house off for one night and you will think of all kinds of things to get!

That's a pretty fascinating idea. Though I would not want to cut the power to fridge and freezer, switching the breakers off the rest of the house would be educational. Could reduce power consumption quite a bit, too. GIMers come up with some of the greatest ideas!

Oh, besides candles, you might want to pick up an LED headband lamp for each person in the family. That way if the power is out you can use both hands to wash the dishes, repair something in the dark, or find the right keys. I also grabbed an LED lantern and some extra flashlights and shopped for tools.

Thermal underwear was marked down, so I grabbed a few pairs of those and some boot socks. We also picked up a big vertical tool cabinet that was something like 60% off so that all our tools can finally have home.

I got a head lamp from Amazon. I was amazed at the light it put out. I was in Costco about a month ago and found this flash light.

Except it was in a package of 3 for 10.00 (three sizes). I thought what the hay, and got two packs. Now I see them in Lowes for 20 to 30.00 for just one big one. The tripod closes up and you can use it like a regular flash light. The head swivels too. I have used in while laying in bed reading. Also works great on the cabinet by the sink, pointed down while doing dishes. It takes 3, 6 or 9 aa batteries.

While in Sams this week, they had 20 lb propane tanks for 26.00. Bags of kingsford briquettes.

Funny this power loss thing was mentioned. We lost power for two days up here in the woods. No big deal but it did underscore the need for some more candles.

I was shocked when my friend told me this evening that he has NO rechargeable AA or AAA batteries. YIKES! I could load up a (non-US ;)) 3rd world country with NiMH units I don't use anymore.
There's a solar charger on sale at MidwayUSA right now on closeout.
Eneloops are the deal, if expensive.
Waaaaayyyy loaded up on RCR123's and 18650's.
Woolie hats and socks.
Sorry I got OT. I mess myself with this stuff.
The after xmas sales sucked sucked sucked.
Intend to peruse the online folks for "camping gear". Hope that makes sense to some....

This is a great idea, I did it for 48 hours many years back. I fliped the main breaker. I ran the freezer and fridge on the generator and learned several things. One of which was a better way to run the cord from the generator into the house.

Its a good idea to do this in the winter and then again in the summer, your needs are not the same summer vs winter.

Also made a list of things I needed that I did not have and stocked up.

Socks -- 9 pair for $4. Stocked up on a bunch since no one in the family knows how to knit them.

Super-thick snow jacket for my son, complete with hood, zipper pockets, and zip-in quilted liner. $42 at Macy's marked down from $149.

I picked up some big candles at the christmas tree shop for $1 each. They were originally $3.

This is an AWESOME idea... now I need to get the wife on board with this idea.

There's a couple of things that I know I need to get inline before I do a "test run". (power and heat are the next things on my list...)

This idea also has the added benefit of less power to pay for that month and escape the main stream media for a few hours. Great idea.:applause_
